The Glebe

This corner site once contained an unprepossessing bungalow of rendered blockwork under a concrete tiled roof and was poorly insulated. Its accommodation was inadequate for present-day requirements and the brief was to design a contemporary home that would meet the needs of modern day living.

With respect to its important position on the road junction, the massing has been carefully considered to prevent over-domination and the high hedges are retained. The new building is built mostly within the existing footprint and the extra accommodation has been achieved within the roof space. The roof is fragmented with low eaves and the choice of materials reflects those found within the locality. The masonry walls have a 300mm mineral wool full fill cavity combining high levels of insulation with high thermal mass to achieve stable internal temperatures. Rainwater is recycled.

The main living space is open to the roof and set a few steps below the entrance level. A bridge links the first-floor bedroom accommodation at the two ends of the roof space. The drum stair is expressed on the front elevation and the open jointed slate wall is continued inside to the rear separating the living room from the guest suite and games room. Full height glazing with sliding doors connects with the garden terrace to the rear. Recessed balconies to the main bedrooms afford good views of the sea.
